PuppySpot.com Commends New York Governor Cuomo and the State Legislature on S.5599 / A.7195

LOS ANGELES, CA (August 18, 2017) – PuppySpot.com, the nation's most trusted service for connecting dog lovers with responsible breeders, commends the work of New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and all members of the State Legislature in successfully enacting S.5599 / A.7195, which brings long-needed statewide regulations to ensure animal welfare at shelters, rescues and other non-profit organizations that offer animals for adoption.

The new legislation requires all non-profit organizations to comply with reasonable, common-sense rules on importation, inspection and registration. It puts no undue burden on reputable organizations doing great work already, but it makes it harder to do business for those unethical individuals and organizations who put profit above the welfare of animals. Those types of unscrupulous shelter and rescue organizations take advantage of consumers and try to capitalize on the widening puppy shortage in the U.S., and some go so far as to import undocumented dogs from Asia and Mexico to meet surging demand. Earlier this year, that practice led to an outbreak of canine influenza in Los Angeles and the unnecessary suffering of dogs.

"There are countless examples of compassion and humanity shown by animal lovers in rescues and shelters around the nation, but there are too many groups out there who unethically trade on the goodwill of reputable organizations, defraud consumers and fail to follow basic standards of practice. With this bill bringing trust and accountability, two of PuppySpot's core values, to the shelter and rescue world, New York is taking a big step toward protecting families and their four-legged friends from unnecessary pain," said Greg Liberman, Chief Executive Officer at PuppySpot. "Closing the loopholes on unregulated shelters and rescues provides peace of mind to the public and moves us closer to the goal of ensuring 100% of puppies come from responsible, humane sources."
