Australian Shepherd Characteristics

Australian Shepherds are intelligent, hard-working dogs originally bred to herd livestock. They’re incredibly alert, energetic, and responsive, making them delightful and entertaining companions. Be ready to give your Aussie copious amounts of intense physical exercise each day. Australian Shepherds are extremely loyal companions that love spending all day being active by their human’s side. They are a larger breed that requires ample space to thrive.

Fast Facts

  • Energy High
  • Size Medium
  • Trainability Accommodating

Contrary to their name, the Australian Shepherd breed originated in the United States as a working dog to herd livestock. They have a two-layer coat that can come in red, blue, merle, or black. They are easy to groom and can go weeks between full baths.

Australian Shepherds have boundless energy and will need plenty of daily exercise. Aim for 30 to 60 minutes per day. A casual stroll around the neighborhood isn’t enough, and having at least a small yard for them to stretch their legs is recommended. If they do not get enough exercise, they can engage in destructive behavior and excessive barking. They’re just letting you know they need to burn some energy.

Aussies make great watchdogs and will bark to warn you if they notice anything suspicious. Given their strong herding instincts, Aussies require an experienced owner to ensure they are properly trained and given the opportunity to let out their energy.

However, they’re super intelligent and tuned in, so they’re quick to learn. Aussies respond well to positive reinforcement training methods. They also thrive with frequent mental stimulation as well as obedience and agility training. You’ll NEVER get bored with an Aussie!

Aussies are a medium-sized breed. They can grow to weigh between 40 and 60 pounds and 18 to 23 inches in height. They are typically quite healthy and enjoy an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years.

How dog-friendly is Delaware?

Delaware is a great state to own a pet! Compared to all 50 states, Delaware tends to rank as a fairly average location for things like pet services, pet-friendly accommodations, and more. But great spots for dogs to roam and play, plus good animal welfare laws make Delaware a solid home for your pup.

Two different leading studies rank Delaware as 28th and 29th most pet-friendly state.

An animal advocacy group called Pawsafe publishes a well-known study ranking the states by factors like animal cruelty laws, pet-friendly accommodations, and the number of dog parks and hiking trails. They ranked Delaware 28th but gave it good marks for its animal welfare laws related to abuse, neglect, fighting, or pet care standards.

Another great study comes from the safety site Safewise. They ranked Delaware 29th with similar rankings across the various indicators.

The consistency between these two studies places Delaware firmly in the middle of the pack of pet-friendly states.
