Australian Shepherd Characteristics
Australian Shepherds are intelligent, hard-working dogs originally bred to herd livestock. They’re incredibly alert, energetic, and responsive, making them delightful and entertaining companions. Be ready to give your Aussie copious amounts of intense physical exercise each day. Australian Shepherds are extremely loyal companions that love spending all day being active by their human’s side. They are a larger breed that requires ample space to thrive.

Contrary to their name, the Australian Shepherd breed originated in the United States as a working dog to herd livestock. They have a two-layer coat that can come in red, blue, merle, or black. They are easy to groom and can go weeks between full baths.
Australian Shepherds have boundless energy and will need plenty of daily exercise. Aim for 30 to 60 minutes per day. A casual stroll around the neighborhood isn’t enough, and having at least a small yard for them to stretch their legs is recommended. If they do not get enough exercise, they can engage in destructive behavior and excessive barking. They’re just letting you know they need to burn some energy.
Aussies make great watchdogs and will bark to warn you if they notice anything suspicious. Given their strong herding instincts, Aussies require an experienced owner to ensure they are properly trained and given the opportunity to let out their energy.
However, they’re super intelligent and tuned in, so they’re quick to learn. Aussies respond well to positive reinforcement training methods. They also thrive with frequent mental stimulation as well as obedience and agility training. You’ll NEVER get bored with an Aussie!
Aussies are a medium-sized breed. They can grow to weigh between 40 and 60 pounds and 18 to 23 inches in height. They are typically quite healthy and enjoy an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years.

West Virginia consistently ranks as a pretty great state for dog lovers! Its beautiful outdoor spaces, access to care, and animal welfare laws help give the state good marks.
We looked at two major studies on pet-friendliness. Both ranked all 50 states by important factors like access to pet care, pet-friendly accommodations, animal cruelty laws, access to dog parks, and more.
The first, by animal welfare group Pawsafe, ranked West Virginia as the 25th most pet-friendly state. Made it into the top half!
The second study ranked West Virginia even higher. Safewise, a consumer safety review site, gave West Virginia 13th place in all 50 states. In both studies, the state scored well for its animal welfare laws related to abuse, neglect, fighting, or pet care standards. I
Taking both studies together shows West Virginia to be pet-friendly overall, but leaves room for improvement.
