Beagle Characteristics
Beagles are a small-to-medium dog breed originally bred as trackers for hunting. They still love to sniff and chase while outside, but they have also become one of the most popular companion dogs. Beagles are smart but known to be a little stubborn and can take some time to train. With plenty of exercise and attention, Beagles are a well-behaved, curious, affectionate addition to the family.

Beagles originated in 16th-century England, where the upper class bred them as rabbit hunters. While many are still used to hunt small game, Beagles are popular companion dogs for families.
They are easily recognizable by their floppy ears and big brown eyes. You can find Beagles in several different colors including black, brown, gold, white, red, lemon, blue, and liver. Most Beagles have a bicolor or tricolor coat.
Beagles require plenty of daily exercise to maintain optimal health and behavior. They also don’t like to be left alone for too long, so be sure to have a plan so they don’t become anxious and destructive in such situations.
True to their nature, Beagles tend to always have their head down to the ground, sniffing for an interesting scent to follow. They will quickly wander off if they catch an alluring smell, so you’ll need to keep a watchful eye on them. But their curious nature makes them fun companions and great adventurers.
Beagles have a gentle and playful temperament but have a tendency to bark at anything and everything. They can also be difficult to train, but you’ll have a loyal and obedient companion with enough patience and positive reinforcement.
Beagles can grow up to 30 pounds in weight and 15 inches in height. The breed is usually quite healthy, enjoying an average lifespan of 10 to 15 years.

We have good news for Maryland’s dog lovers – the state ranks fairly well overall for pet-friendliness. Maryland is especially strong when it comes to protective laws for animals, which we love to see.
In the study by Pawsafe, a great source for tracking pet safety, Maryland ranked as the 22nd most pet-friendly state. The state also ranked 6th in terms of pet services available. The ranking was determined by adding up boutiques and supplies, boarding and daycare facilities, pet sitters, and veterinarians. It was also 6th for dog trails per capita. Of the 988 parks in the state, 655 are dog-friendly. Maryland is clearly a great place for adventurous pups
Safewise conducted a similar study and ranked Maryland as the 15th most pet-friendly state. In the study, the state receives strong marks for its animal welfare laws related to abuse, neglect, fighting, or pet care standards. However, Safewise did find the state to have a very low amount of pet-friendly rentals, with just 27% of rentals accepting dogs and cats.
Is Baltimore a pet-friendly city?
Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland and the state’s economic center. A study by Wallethub found that Baltimore was the 13th least pet-friendly city. It ranked 53rd for outdoor pet-friendliness, 62nd for pet budget, and 87th for pet health and wellness.
A Trust for Public Land (TPL) study reviews the nation’s 100 largest cities to see which has the most dog parks. In the study, Baltimore is ranked 78th with 0.5 parks per 100,000 residents. There are three total dog parks in the city.
Of course, plenty of Baltimore residents have wonderful happy lives with their dogs. But a few of the perks you can find in other cities just aren’t there.

The overall save rate for the state is 79.5%. This is one of the lowest rates in the country. We like to see Maryland moving in the right direction, but there’s quite a way to go yet.
