Golden Retriever Characteristics

It should come as no surprise that Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dogs in the United States. Golden Retrievers are intelligent, friendly, affectionate, and loyal. They also make great hunters, workers, and guides for the blind. While active and energetic, they are also easy to train and make for a gentle and loving family companion.

  • Size Large
  • Trainability Accommodating

Golden Retrievers are a popular family dog full of energy and ceaseless playfulness. Their color can vary from light golden to cream to dark golden. Bred to work with people, they enjoy pleasing their owner and helping with jobs around the house.

Golden Retrievers are active and require at least one hour of daily exercise. Without it, they may exhibit behavioral problems. True to their name, Golden Retrievers enjoy retrieving anything you want to throw. A favorite hunting companion, law enforcement personnel often use them to sniff and track things.

Golden Retrievers are heavy shedders, requiring frequent brushing to get the loose hair out of their coats.  These coats typically come in their iconic golden shade, but can be black, red, or white as well. Goldens love to carry something in their mouths like other retrievers, whether it is a ball, toy, or bone.

Golden Retriever puppies require special care early on because they grow quickly during their fourth to seventh months. This makes them prone to bone disorders, but overall, they are generally healthy. They will maintain their playful puppy personality well into their third year of age.

Golden Retrievers are a large breed and grow to weigh between 55 and 75 pounds. The typical lifespan for a Golden Retriever is 10 to 12 years. They are loyal, loving companions.

How dog-friendly is Tennessee?

The state has some strong pros and strong cons when it comes to pet safety and dog-friendliness. In fact, different studies come to very different conclusions about Tennessee. Some of that is related to the fact that Tennessee lags behind other states when it comes to its animal welfare laws related to abuse, neglect, fighting, or pet care standards.

One leading study was conducted by the animal advocacy group Pawsafe. Their study ranks all 50 states according to several key criteria, including animal cruelty laws, pet-friendly accommodations, pet services, and the number of dog parks and hiking trails.

Pawsafe ranked Tennessee fairly low – as the 36th most pet-friendly state.

However, another reputable study, conducted by the safety review site Safewise ranked Tennessee as the 9th most pet-friendly state. This is in part because of a few cities that have great standards for dog living.

Combining these two studies together puts Tennessee somewhere in the middle of the pack of pet-friendly states.

Are cities in Tennessee pet-friendly?

Financial services site Wallethub reviewed the 100 largest cities in the country to rank them by pet-friendliness. Here’s how a couple of Tennessee cities fared.

In a separate ranking by the Trust for Public Land (TPL), Nashville ranked in the 40th spot for dog parks per capita with 1.2 dog parks per 100,000 people.

Memphis

Memphis also scored well at 47th in pet-friendliness overall.
