Pekingese

Staff was very helpful in answering all my questions before we purchase our pekingese. We were updated every few days as to what was going on with our puppy and the day of arrival was easy. Great service.

Pekingese Characteristics

The Pekingese is perhaps the quintessential lap dog. Smart, loyal, and above all, snuggly, these dogs make wonderful companions for just about anyone, from retirees to new pet parents to apartment dwellers. They can be a little high-maintenance from time to time, but are incredibly loyal and loving to their family.

For centuries, Pekingese dogs were bred as the valued companions of the imperial family of China. Today, the Pekingese breed will greet you with dignity and pride and is fully aware of its powerful lineage. These dogs show great affection for their humans but have a stubborn streak and a sense of pride that can be difficult to work with. The Peke considers himself in charge of any situation, so informing your dog who the alpha is is crucial to having a manageable companion.

The Pekingese is a truly small dog, standing about 6-9 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 7-14 pounds. Famous for their long flowing black or white coat, the Pekingese is unmistakable for any other breed.

Of all small dogs that think they’re bigger than they are, the Pekingese might be the boldest! They’ve never met another dog they didn’t think they could boss around a bit. To help ensure your Pekingese doesn’t find itself in trouble, introduce him to large dogs under close supervision and be prepared to break up any potential quarrels.

They’re quite social and with a bit of training will be friendly with anyone.

How dog-friendly is Louisiana?

Louisiana is a wonderful state for dogs and their humans to live and travel! The state ranks consistently higher than its neighbor, Mississippi, as well.

A few regular studies help us rank the 50 states by pet-friendliness. Two reputable studies rank all 50 states according to factors like animal cruelty laws, pet services, pet-friendly living, dog parks, hiking trails, and more.

The first study comes from the animal advocacy group Pawsafe. They rank Louisiana as the 24th most pet-friendly state. The state also scored well for its animal welfare laws related to pet abuse, neglect, fighting, or pet care standards.

The second study comes from the safety review site Safewise. THey ranked Louisiana a little bit higher, as the 18th most pet-friendly state in the country.

Overall, these two rankings set Louisiana in a solid, healthy spot for pet-friendliness.

Are cities in Louisiana pet-friendly?

We also keep an eye on a study by Wallethub that reviews the 100 largest cities in the country to rank them by pet-friendliness.

New Orleans

New Orleans is Louisiana’s biggest city with a population of nearly 400,000. Wallethub ranked New Orleans in the 10th spot overall out of 100! The city ranked 34th in pet budget and 10th in pet health and wellness, but slightly lower at 44th in outdoor pet-friendliness – mostly due to the heat and humidity.

A Trust for Public Land (TPL) study ranked New Orleans 58th for dog parks compared to the 100 other largest cities. New Orleans has 0.8 dog parks per 100,000 people.

The top dog-friendly attractions in this very popular tourist destination are Ghost City Tours and Metairie Cemetery.
