Jack Russell Terrier Characteristics

The Jack Russell Terrier, made famous by the old children’s show “Wishbone,” was bred as a highly intelligent hunting companion, but can also make a great house pet with patience and early socialization. These dogs can be a handful! But they’re so much fun. Make sure you give your Jack Russell plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to ensure consistent good behavior.

Fast Facts

  • Energy High
  • Size Small
  • Trainability Responsive

The Jack Russell terrier was designed nearly 200 years ago in England by a clergy member named Parson John Russell (who often went by "Jack"). Today's Jack Russell Terrier is an athletic, intelligent hunting dog that is happily trained, but needs consistent mental stimulation to truly thrive. And they’ll make sure you know!

Standing between 10-15 inches tall and weighing between 13-17 pounds, the Jack Russell Terrier is on the smaller end of the well-known hunting dogs. But don't let their small size fool you into believing these dogs are made as apartment companions; the Jack Russell requires lots of exercise and mental stimulation, and we recommend a full-sized house and yard for your pup to play. Jack Russells have three different coat types, but all are white with black or brown markings.

Like many terriers, the Jack Russell is prone to barking, chewing, and digging. But not to worry – these tendencies can all the remedied with early obedience training. If you're rescuing a Jack Russell, try training them to dig in a specific safe location instead of trying to train them out of digging altogether.

Like many small dogs, Jack Russells may be at risk for dental issues. This is likely due to the smaller skulls and jaws, which can lead to overcrowding of the teeth. This overcrowding creates more spaces where food can get trapped, and bacteria can grow. Taking your Jack Russell to get regular checkups at the vet will ensure any dental disease is caught early and your pup is healthy and safe.
