Shihpoo Characteristics

Shihpoos are wonderful companions with their high intelligence, loyalty, and extremely affectionate natures. They’re very outgoing and energetic, but their small size and intelligence help make them a great pet even for new pet parents. The key with a Shihpoo is to start obedience training early and make sure you socialize them with other dogs and people.

The Shihpoo is a cross between the cuddly Shih-Tzu and hypoallergenic Poodle. Like most Poodle mixes, Shihpoos were bred to help people with allergies. These dogs can come with straight hair like the Shih-Tzu, curly hair like the Poodle, or a mixture. The Shihpoo also blends the best of both breeds and isn’t as prone to the health issues of purebred dogs. At the same time, you should always make sure to research your breeder before purchasing.

Weighing anywhere between 8-18 lbs and standing between 8-16 inches, these little dogs are commonly seen in black, white, and merle. Many experts agree that small dogs are at a higher risk for dental issues than large dogs. This is likely due to the smaller skulls and jaws, which can lead to overcrowding of the teeth. This overcrowding creates more spaces where food can get trapped, and bacteria can grow. Taking your Shihpoo to get regular checkups at the vet will ensure any dental disease is caught early.

A quirk of many dogs who weigh less than ten pounds is that they believe they’re much larger than they actually are. Consequently, a lot of little dogs often aren’t afraid to pick fights with large dogs. To help ensure your Shihpoo doesn’t find itself in trouble, introduce it to large dogs under close supervision and be prepared to break up any potential quarrels. If you plan on taking your Shihpoo to a dog park, keep a constant eye on your dog.

How dog-friendly is Maine?

The short answer is: Extremely dog-friendly! Maine consistently ranks in the top 10 for dog-friendly states, across several different studies. The top two studies come from ranking sites Pawsafe and Safewise.

Pawsafe’s study ranks all 50 states according to their overall safety and friendliness for pets. They rank the states according to factors like animal cruelty laws, pet-friendly accommodations, and the number of dog parks and hiking trails.

In Pawsafe study, Maine ranks as the 2nd most pet-friendly state! The state also scored well for its animal welfare laws related to abuse, neglect, fighting, or pet care standards.

Safewise ran a similar study that ranks Maine as the 10th most pet-friendly state. Averaging these two studies together puts Maine close to the very front of the pack of pet-friendly states.
