Siberian Husky Characteristics

Siberian Huskies are beautiful, medium-sized dogs that closely resemble their wolf ancestors. They are highly intelligent and energetic dogs that require regular exercise as well as frequent grooming.

Due to their pack-animal nature, they are social and friendly creatures that will play with most people or animals. However, this friendly demeanor can make them lackluster watchdogs without proper training.

Developed as sled dogs, Siberian Huskies have been bred to haul light loads at medium speeds over long distances and snowy terrain. Huskies are noticeably smaller than their cousin, the Alaskan Malamute, and often only weigh between 40-60 lbs.  These dogs come in a variety of colors, including pure white, red, black, and brown.  Because their coat is not particularly oily, these dogs do not produce the same “wet dog smell” that many dogs do. That being said, huskies require frequent grooming in order to keep rogue fur-balls at bay.

Huskies thrive when they have access to a large yard or space to roam around. Because they are well-known escape artists, providing them enough exercise and space to play will prevent them from acting out, tearing up furniture, or trying to run away.

Siberian Huskies are also famous for being a very vocal breed. Huskies often whine in a unique way that can be described as "talking" or "yelling" by loving dog owners, and these whines can be indications of anything from anxiety to affection. These whines are not to be confused with the howling that is performed by all dogs (usually when an ambulance drives by). Because they are born pack animals, Huskies are most likely to howl when left alone as a result of separation anxiety.

How dog-friendly is California?

California’s dog lovers can rejoice – the state goes above and beyond in many areas of animal rights and care for our furry friends.

California loves dogs!

California’s dog-friendliness is clear right out of the gates when we look at their pet population. Californians own the most dogs of any state in the U.S., with a little over 40% of homes housing a canine friend. And of the 264 shelters in the state, 118 are no-kill shelters.

California has also enacted plenty of animal welfare laws to guard against people leaving pets in cars or abusing their pets. The state limits owners to four dogs per household to ensure all pups get the attention and care that they need. California is also the only state where pet insurance is mandatory.

A study by WalletHub, the consumer finance site, found that 17 of the top 100 most dog-friendly cities in the country are located in California. They measured dog-friendliness by examining important things like pet-care and veterinary care costs, walkability, percentage of pet-friendly apartments, and animal welfare laws.

Safewise conducted a similar study and ranked California as the sixth most dog-friendly state in the country, while Pawsafe ranks CA as the 26th most dog-friendly state. Both sites are trusted in the pet-loving community.

Dog-friendly spots to go in California

With so much to offer as a state, there are unsurprisingly plenty of awesome dog-friendly spots across California. One of the state’s main attractions is the number of dog-friendly beaches. From San Diego to all the way up the North Coast, many beaches are open to dogs to play and run through the sand.

California is also home to plenty of parks, restaurants, and other areas and activities for you to enjoy with your pups. According to a Trust for Public Land (TPL) study, San Francisco has the fifth-highest number of dog parks per city by capita, with four dog parks per 100,000 residents. Bakersfield, Fremont, Long Beach, and Chula Vista also ranked in the top 25 for the most dog parks.

There are fewer parks in the Los Angeles area, with only 13 parks for the four million-plus residents. Of these parks, eight of them are off-leash parks.

Any areas for improvement?

The main area of improvement for California is dog-friendly housing. California offers a fairly average percentage of pet-friendly rentals. Not to worry – you’ll still find a place for you and your pup, but you should plan to spend a little more time in your search.
