Yorkshire Terrier Characteristics

Yorkshire terriers, or Yorkies, are a small and energetic breed – with personalities that far outstrip their tiny size! With their feisty nature also comes a beautiful loyalty to and protectiveness of their humans. Their small stature makes them great for apartment living and a companion for the whole family. Known as big dogs in a small dog body, Yorkies will not hesitate to bark or stand up to the sight of new people or animals

  • Trainability

Yorkshire Terriers are the smallest breed in the terrier group. These feisty, high-energy dogs are known for their big personalities and adorable appearance. They can come in a wide variety of colors, including gold, yellow, black, and steel blue.

Yorkies are sassy, but they are also charming and highly affectionate with their owners. Their small size makes them great apartment dogs, but remember that they’re a bit yappy – a trait your neighbors may not like.

Yorkies need daily exercise, whether it’s a quick walk around the block or a quick play session in the yard. Yorkies play nicely with other animals but may get a little territorial when introduced to a new friend. So, you’ll want to be extra careful if you bring a new pet into your home.

Yorkies were originally bred as rat hunters, and they still carry the loyalty expected of a working-class purebred. Their size makes them great with kids. While they have a strong personality, Yorkies can become attached to their owners and will need plenty of attention.

As one of the smaller breeds, Yorkies only grow to weigh up to 7 pounds and 7 to 8 inches in height. They are usually quite healthy and enjoy an average lifespan of 11 to 15 years.

How dog-friendly is Los Angeles?

WalletHub analyzed the 100 largest American cities to see which are the most pet-friendly. In their study, Los Angeles is ranked as the 73rd most pet-friendly city. With plenty of sunlight and plenty of outdoor activities, it’s not surprising that the city scored 6th for outdoor pet-friendliness. Los Angeles also boasts the 5th highest number of animal shelters per capita, and the city scores well for health and wellness, ranking 44th out of all cities.

Dog parks and activities

As a large city, there are plenty of parks for you and your dog to enjoy. According to a study by the Trust for Public Land (TPL), Los Angeles has 13 dog parks, approximately 0.3 parks per 100,000 residents. Eight of the city’s dog parks are off-leash parks.

Some of the most popular dog parks in the city are Laurel Canyon Dog Park in the hills of Mulholland, Lake Hollywood Park by the famous Hollywood sign, and Alice’s Dog Park in Pasadena.

While there are about 70 miles of coastline surrounding the LA area, there is only one off-leash beach in the city where dogs are allowed to roam. That said, there are plenty of dog-friendly beaches in the areas outside of the city. Some of the most popular beach spots to take your pup include Granada Beach in the Belmont Shore Beach and Huntington Dog Beach, a little further south, in Orange County.

With 475 dog-friendly restaurants in Los Angeles, the city is one of the best places to grab a bite with your furry friend. A few of the most popular pet-friendly restaurants in Los Angeles include The Waffle, Fred 62, The Morrison, and the Alcove Cafe & Bakery.

LA offers plenty of groomers, spa services, pet stores, and other dog-friendly establishments. Leashed dogs are welcome across the city's many outdoor attractions and shopping malls.
