American Water Spaniel is a very rare breed and not well-known outside the area of the Great Lakes in the United States. This breed was bred to be an all-around hunting dog. Just like their name says, they are really good at swimming. This medium-sized all-around hunting dog has a very high energy level and enthusiasm. They require lots of daily exercises and mental stimulation. Without the daily exercises they get bored easily, and you may expect excessive chewing and recreational barking. Early proper training is very important with this breed because they can become very stubborn and manipulative. They are great with young children, but without proper socialization and training, they can be aggressive and territorial with other pets. This breed is usually 15 to 18 inches tall and weighs 25 to 40 pounds.

English Springer Spaniels have long been considered a quintessential hunting dog. The oldest spaniel breed, Springer Spaniels were used to “spring” game out of its hiding spots when hunting. The Portuguese Water Dog is a spirited working dog that loves to be in the water. Being that it was originally bred to assist fishermen at sea, the "Portie" as it is affectionately known, is an excellent swimmer and retriever. This breed made headlines in recent years as the First Dogs, Bo and Sunny, are both Portuguese Water Dogs. Porties are often confused with a similar breed, the Poodle, and like to stay active and show affection. They are loving, loyal and dependable, and make great family pets.
