Chesapeake Bay Retriever (aka Chessie) is one of the few breeds that originally were born in the USA. Chesapeake has been thought to descend from two Newfoundlands, called Sailor and Canton, who came to the USA on a ship from England in 1807. Chessie is an intelligent breed with a strong work ethic. This breed has an alert nature, which makes them excellent watchdogs. Chessie is a very stubborn breed and requires steady and firm training by every adult member of the family.
