About Xoloitzcuintlis

The Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced "show-low-eats-QUEENT-lee"), is an ancient breed from Mexico and Central America. They originated from the dogs of the Old World dating back over 3000 years ago and are often depicted in Aztec, Mayan, and the Colima Indians art and sculptures. The Xoloitzcuintli, often referred to as the Mexican Hairless or the Xolo ("show-low"), was revered by the Aztec as a guide for the soul to the underworld. They recently found themselves in pop culture when Disney Pixar's 2017 animated movie "Coco" featured a Xolo named Dante, who accompanied his human companion on his journey through the Land of the Dead.

The Xoloitzcuintli is known for being a calm, loving, and intelligent breed. They're predominately a hairless breed but can also sport a full smooth coat. Although they are not considered a hypoallergenic breed, their hairless body and minimal dander make them a great choice for someone with mild dog allergies. The hairless variety requires routine skincare including lotion, sunscreen, and even a shirt or sweater to protect them from the elements. They're also adaptable to any home since they come in three sizes: Toy (10-15lbs), Miniature (15-30lbs), and Standard (30-55lbs). The Xoloitzcuintli may not be the best choice for a first-time dog owner, but those willing to bring one into their home will find a loyal companion for life.
