FDA Announces Recall of Certain Dog Food Products

In a recent release, the FDA announced the recall of certain dog food products due to potentially elevated levels of aflatoxin, "a toxin produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus, which can grow on corn and other grains used as ingredients in pet food. At high levels, aflatoxin can cause illness and death in pets."

The original announcement was made last month and only included a short list of food products. Since then, the list has been expanded to include several more brands. The voluntary recall was issued by Sunshine Mills, Inc. and the affected products were distributed in retail stores within the United States.

According to the FDA release, "retailers who received the recalled lots have been contacted and asked to pull any remaining inventory of these lots from their shelves. There are no other Champ(r), Field Trial(r), Good Dog, Hunter's Special(r), Old Glory(r), Paws Happy Life(r), Pet Expert, Principle, Retriever(r), River Bend, Sportsman's Pride(r), Sprout(r), Thrifty(r), Top Runner(r) or Whiskers & Tails products or other lot codes of these products affected by this voluntary recall. The lot codes can be located on the back of each bag.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products should discontinue use of the product and may return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers may contact Sunshine Mills, Inc. customer service at (800) 705-2111 from 7AM to 4PM Central Time, Monday through Friday, or by email at [email protected] for additional information."

A list of affected products can be found on FDA's website.
