The Shar-Pei is a unique, distinguished breed. Their adorably wrinkled bodies and faces make them among the more easily-recognized breeds. Shar-Pei were bred thousands of years ago to be protection dogs to the Chinese royals, and after almost going extinct at one point, gained popularity in the United States in the 1970s. They are devoted, friendly, calm, and tend to be protective of their families. As a medium-sized breed, Shar-Pei do well in apartment living as well as in larger homes.
