Contrary to popular belief, Shelties are not miniature Collies, but are their own unique breed. A fairly small breed (usually under 25lbs in adulthood), Shetland Sheepdogs are wonderful family pets.

They are great with children and other animals, adore their people, and are very willing to obey and please their owners. They are extremely intelligent and quick to learn, and also tend to be fairly vocal. These gentle, playful pups are well-suited for active families.

The Shetland Sheepdog is a medium-sized dog that weighs 15 – 25 pounds and has a life of 12 – 13 years.   While the Shetland Sheepdog is generally healthy, they are prone to some specific disease conditions.  Always contact your veterinarian as soon as you notice any physical or behavioral changes.

• Recurring seizures, Idiopathic Epilepsy (IE)

• Dislocated Kneecap, Patellar Luxation

• Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD)

• Collie Eye Anomaly

• Von Willebrand's Disease (VWD)

• Dermatomyositis

• Gallbladder mucoceles

• Gum Disease, Periodontal Disease

• Multiple drug sensitivity (MDR1)

• Autoimmune Thyroiditis (AIT)

Suggested Screening

• Hip evaluation

• Patella evaluation

• Eye examination

• Collie Eye Anomaly – DNA test

Routine Health Care:

• Spay or neuter

• Routine dental care

• Moderate exercise

Shetland Sheepdogs can bark a lot. They are intelligent and learn quickly, so train them early to respond to commands to keep the barking in check.

These dogs are playful and active, so be sure to provide them with lots of mental and physical stimulation.
