    About West Highland White Terriers

Although these little white dogs were originally meant to be rodent-hunting dogs, or "ratters", today's Westies are primarily bred as companion dogs. With a feisty, spunky personality, a Westie is not your typical lap dog; they are happy, active dogs and love to be running and exploring outdoors. They are a hardy, independent breed that are loyal, entertaining and love to be with people.

These extremely friendly and well-liked dogs make great companions for adults and children over the age of 8.

Origin of the West Highland White Terrier

According to the records of notable authors, this breed originated at Poltalloch, Scotland, 100 years before their appearance at dog shows. According to legend, a reddish dog belonging to the Duke of Argyll in Scotland was mistakenly shot for a fox. The Duke decided right then to breed only white dogs that could be easily spotted in the field.
