Bringing a puppy home is a big decision and knowing where your puppy comes from matters. That’s why PuppySpot works with breeders who meet some of the most comprehensive standards in the industry, with a focus on transparency, accountability, and the wellbeing of every dog.
PuppySpot’s standards were developed with guidance from our Scientific Advisory Board, which includes licensed veterinarians and an animal ethicist. Their expertise helps ensure alignment with best practices in animal health, welfare, and ethical breeding. Every breeder in the PuppySpot network is carefully vetted and held to strict requirements that go above and beyond state and federal regulations. We don’t just look at the basics; we take a full, detailed look at each breeder’s program to ensure their dogs are raised in safe, clean, and compassionate environments.
We also take a deeper look into breeding practices, like how often dogs are bred, what steps are taken to help reduce the risk of genetic or hereditary conditions, and whether the breeder demonstrates strong knowledge of responsible breeding.
Before joining the PuppySpot network, each breeder completes a detailed interview covering all aspects of their program and must provide documentation to verify they meet our standards, including:

Review of housing conditions, cleanliness, and available space

Photos or videos of all areas where dogs and puppies are housed
The PuppySpot team conducts In-person visits are conducted to further assess their program when feasible. In addition, we also conduct online research to identify potential scams, patterns of unhealthy puppies, or other red flags. Above all else, the PuppySpot approach is rooted in one principle: dogs come first. Every breeder we work with is expected to treat their dogs with respect, dignity, and compassion. Fewer than 10% of breeders who apply are accepted into our program, reflecting our rigorous standards and selective process
The PuppySpot screening process doesn’t stop after onboarding. Breeders are re-evaluated on an ongoing basis, including annual reviews that require updated documentation and photos to ensure they continue meeting standards over time
There are often misconceptions about online puppy placement platforms. Responsible breeding is not defined by the size of an operation; it’s defined by the level of care provided, health practices, and the overall wellbeing of dogs. PuppySpot only works with breeders who meet these expectations and demonstrate a consistent commitment to their dogs.
At the same time, families want to feel informed and confident throughout the process, especially when they’re not able to visit in person. That’s why PuppySpot continues to increase transparency and access wherever possible. Families may have the opportunity to speak directly with breeders before bringing a puppy home to have a better understanding of where their puppy came from. We also provide as much information as possible about each puppy’s background, including details about the breeder and the puppy’s parents. Our team is available to answer questions, provide additional context, and help facilitate communication with the breeder when appropriate
