Labrador Retriever
Elsa is fitting in beautifully with our family. We have two Great Danes. My granddaughter loves her and she not intimidated by her size.

Trainability Accommodating
Labrador Retrievers are a loving and intelligent dog breed. They are famous for being devoted to their owners and love showing their affection and receiving it in return.
Labs get along well with all family members, which is why they’re very popular with families. They’re also quite intelligent, which makes them fairly easy to train.
A Labrador’s color can vary from chocolate to black to yellow or even white. Their coats are sleek and fairly easy to care for, but they are heavy shedders, so you’ll need to brush them regularly. They have wide foreheads and sweet, affectionate eyes – but watch out for their strong tails that are often wagging!
Their topcoat is thick and short, and their undercoat is soft and helps protect against cold temperatures and water.
Labs have the high energy levels you would expect from a working dog breed. They require at least 30 to 60 minutes of daily exercise. Also, Labs love to eat! You have to be careful not to overfeed them as they will eat until they are overweight.
While most Labs spend their days soaking up the attention of their owners, they can still make excellent work dogs. They are particularly great for search and rescue, as well as hunting.
Labrador Retrievers are a large, sturdy breed and can weigh anywhere from 55 to 80 pounds. The typical lifespan for a Labrador Retriever is 10 to 12 years.
How dog-friendly is Arizona?
In general, Arizona is a great place for dogs – with parks, plenty of dog-griendly restaurants, and great access to pet care. The one downside is that the state has a very low percentage of pet-friendy rentals available. This single factor brings their overall score down a bit.
Pawsafe put Arizona in the 46th place for pet-friendliness in their study. They noted the relatively low percentage of pet-friendly rentals at just 18%, which brought the overal score down.
A similar study from Safewise puts Arizona as a more pet-friendly place, ranking the state at 27th.
Both of these studies consider a wide range of important factors for your beloved pet’s health and happiness – including pet care costs, walkability scores, the number of pet-friendly rentals, and animal welfare laws.
How pet-friendly are Arizona’s cities?
SmartAsset reviewed the 100 largest U.S. cities to grade them for pet-friendliness.
Tucson
In their study, SmartAsset named Tucson as the most pet-friendly city in the country! This is the second year in a row that the city has received such an honor.
Tucson has the fifth highest number of dog parks, vet offices and dog-friendly restaurants per 10,000 establishments. The city has 254 dog-friendly restaurants, which ranks in the top 20. There are also four dog-friendly shopping centers in the city.
Phoenix
In the same study, Phoenix was ranked as the 18th most pet-friendly city. Another study by WalletHub placed Phoenix 22nd.
There are 172 dog-friendly restaurants in the city and 11 dog-friendly shopping centers. Additionally, the city of Scottsdale tied for the 24th most pet-friendly city. It has 112 dog-friendly restaurants and 16 dog friendly shopping centers.
Scottsdale
WalletHub did a similar study that rated Scottsdale as the most pet-friendly city in the country. The key factor for WalletHub’s ranking is Scottdale’s fantastic pet health and wellness. They also ranked third for outdoor pet-friendliness.
A few more pet-related Arizona facts
In Arizona, 43% residents own a dog, which is above the national average of 40%. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), the most popular dogs in the state are Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers. In the city of Phoenix, these breeds are just as popular, but people also love Pit Bulls.
The state’s total pet ownership percentage is also far above the national average with 69% of Arizona homes owning a pet. Like we said, Arizona loves its pets!
Animal welfare & dog shelters in Arizona
Arizona saved 2,458 more animals in 2020 than in 2019 and 33 of the state’s 66 animal shelters are no-kill shelters. The overall save rate for the state is approximately 86% so they only need a small increase to meet the 90% to become a no-kill state. We hope to see this percentage go up!
