Possible Salmonella Health Risk in Midwestern Pet Foods

David Mead is the Vice President, Head of Marketing at PuppySpot. Dogs have been an important part of his life since his early childhood. He has a passion for dog training and believes that dogs make the best companions as long as you treat them right.

The FDA recently announced a voluntary recall of dog food by Midwestern Pet Foods due to a potential salmonella contamination. The recall includes a large list of brands with specific expiration dates. These brands include:

  • CanineX
  • Earthborn Holistic
  • Venture, Unrefined
  • Sportmix Wholesomes
  • Pro Pac
  • Pro Pac Ultimates
  • Sportstrail
  • Sportmix
  • Meridian

According to the FDA, "Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. No human or pet illnesses have been reported to date."

The products being recalled were produced at the Monmouth, IL facility and distributed to retail stores nationwide. Please do not feed recalled products to pets or any other animals. The FDA recommends to destroy the food in a way children, pets, and wildlife cannot access them and to "wash and sanitize pet food bowls, cups and storage containers. Always ensure you wash and sanitize your hands after handling recalled food or any utensils that come in contact with recalled food."
